GlaxoSmithKline: A Pharmaceutical Company For the People

Most people don’t take the time to truly understand where the medical drugs that they are taking on a regular basis are coming from, whether they are prescription drugs or over the counter products. Still, an understanding of the origin of what you are taking is imperative to understanding the pharmaceutical industry, an industry that has more to do with your health and your personal financing than you may think. GlaxoSmithKline is one of the major players in the pharmaceuticals industry.

Just Starting Out

Just like many of the major drug companies in the United States, the GlaxoSmithKline company has a rich British history beginning in the year 1715, when Plough Court Pharmacy was established in London. The history of GlaxoSmithKline is actually two fold, as it was created by a merger of two major companies: GlaxoWellcome and SmithKline Beecham. John K. Smith opened his first drugstore in Philadelphia in 1830, while in 1842 Thomas Beecham launched his Beecham’s Pills laxative.

Popular GlaxoSmithKline Products

GlaxoSmithKline is a major pharmaceutical player in all types of health related products, including prescription medicines as well as over-the-counter medicines. Prescription medications include Amoxil, brand name for amoxicillin, Augmentin, Flonase, Paxil, Tagamet, Wellbutrin, Zantac and Zyban, to name just a few. Then there are the over the counter products. These include Abreva, Citrucel, Nicoderm, Nicorette , Polident, Poligrip, Sensodyne, and Tums. In addition to these, Glaxo Smith Kline also creates vaccines including DPT or diphtheria, pertussis and tetanus, and hepatitis vaccines.

What About Drug Research?

Not unlike other pharmaceutical companies, drug research is an important aspect of the GlaxoSmithKline culture. One of the specific focuses of the R&D (Research and development) portion of GSK, are the diseases unique to developing countries. These are specifically malaria, HIV, and tuberculosis. Still, there nineteen ongoing research projects that GlaxoSmithKline is pursuing with the goal of providing medications for these diseases that are threatening many developing nations. The Metabolic and Viral Diseases Center of Excellence in Discovery, one of GSK’s research projects, is based in Research Triangle Park in Raleigh, North Carolina. This Center leads in “discovering new HIV/AIDS therapies.”
